Cannock Chase is a large densely woodland area which has become known as one the UK's most active paranormal hotspots. In recent times there has been reports of werewolves, UFO's and ghosts by the local residents.
On April 26, 2007, the local Stafford Post newspaper ran the following story: "A rash of sightings of a 'werewolf' type creature prowling around the outskirts of Stafford, have prompted a respected Midlands paranormal group to investigate.

West Midlands Ghost Club says they have been contacted by a number of shocked residents who saw what they claimed to be a `hairy wolf-type creature' walking on its hind legs around the German War Cemetery, just off Camp Road, in between Stafford and Cannock. Several of the witnesses claim the creature sprang up on its hind legs and ran into the nearby bushes when it was spotted."
The newspaper continued: "Nick Duffy, of West Midlands Ghost Club, said the stories of werewolf sightings in Chase area were something that he had encountered before. He said: 'the first person to contact us was a postman, who told us he had seen what he thought was a werewolf on the German War Cemetery site. He said he was over there on a motorbike and saw what he believed was a large dog. When he got closer, the creature got on his hind legs and ran away."
The Post quoted Duffy as adding that: "I've spoke to many witnesses and I know when they are putting it on. But what struck me as strange about this was the way he told it. I'm in no doubt that he was telling the truth."
The creature was also apparently spotted by a scout leader walking over the forest land earlier in April. The man, who the Post stated did not want to be named, said he saw what he initially believed was a large dog prowling by the bushes. It was only when he got into his car to drive away that he realized something strange about the animal.

He said: "It just looked like a huge dog. But when I slammed the door of my car it reared up on its back legs and ran into the trees. It must have been about six to seven feet tall. I know it sounds absolutely mad, but I know what I saw."
In recent years there have been a high number of pet disappearances especially in the area around the German War Cemetery, and it's certainly the case that the area has been the site of animal (particularly deer) mutilations over the past decade.
Lady Of The Chase
Also in the news is a mysterious apparition which confronted a local woman on a lonely stretch of road, the apparition has been dubbed 'The Lady of the Chase'. 'Linda', has come forward to tell us her disturbing ghost story.
"I had what I can only describe as a totally surreal experience whilst driving across Cannock Chase last year," she said. "I had not been able to tell anyone about this apart from my partner. It was him who encouraged me to contact you following some of the reports you have made in your paper." Linda was returning home after visiting a friend in Pye Green, near Cannock, last November when she was confronted by 'the lady'.
"It was about 11.30pm and I had decided to take a short cut across the Chase, as I neared Spring Slade Lodge I had to brake hard as a person suddenly stood in the road." After Linda recovered from the shock of the near collision she turned her attention to the figure in front of her car. "In my headlights the form was of a tall female, pale grey in colour. She appeared to be naked but with no visible breasts or genitalia.
"Immediately, I was drawn to her eyes, large hypnotic eyes that totally transfixed me. I was in dread and unable to move a muscle. I was aware I was being 'mentally examined' and there was nothing I could do to prevent this." After a couple of minutes the figure turned and walked away into nearby woodland.
"It was only when she had disappeared that I could move again," Linda said. "I accelerated away in panic." She told us she has not been able to drive across Cannock Chase since the incident and added: "Sometimes, after a dream, I can see a vivid image of the woman's face with those staring eyes. I'm not a very good artist, but felt compelled to draw the face of this figure. I call her 'The Lady of the Chase'.
Was Linda's apparition really a ghost or is it possible that what Linda saw was in actual fact an alien. Linda describes being mentally examined by the entity and being unable to move, these sensations are often reported by abductees. The figure also walked way into the nearby woodland, spirits usually just fade away.
Cannock Chase UFO Sightings
Cannock Chase has long been popular with UFO enthusiasts, just earlier this year the MOD released previously top secret files revealing the skies over Cannock had been the subject of investigations after reports of strange lights hovering above the town.
Between 1988 and the early 90s a raft of sightings led to the period being known as the 'Staffordshire Flap'. The most significant even during that time happened on May 16 1988. Evidence suggests two UFOs, noticed by Air Traffic Control at Birmingham Airport, descended to a height of 1000-feet. Dozens of witnesses, including police officer, watched in awe as the two shapes moved across the sky. After swooping and climbing maneuvers the objects vanished in the blink of an eye.
The Cannock Chase UFO Sighting
The closest encounter for Chase folk however is shrouded in mystery. Older residents remember military cordons and road blocks following the crash landing of a craft on the Chase in 1964. The object, tracked by British, Russian and US intelligence, broke into several pieces with some coming down in the woods outside of Cannock.
Locals travelling across the Chase were told to find other routes while some witnesses reported seeing a craft being loaded onto a transport truck. Even at the time there were accusations of a cover up, the residents were told to forget what they had seen and that it was a matter of national security.
“When night falls, enter the woods at your peril,
For inside lurks something worse than the devil.
Avoid at all costs the gathering place, where at midnight the pig-man roams on Cannock Chase.”
Most people know about Bigfoot, Grassman and Chupacabra, but only a few have had the privilege to hear the story of the Pig-Man. Out of those few people, only a handful have personally witnessed the creepy beast.
The legend tells there is a monster lurking in the woodlands of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire county, England. This mysterious spot, cataloged by many as a close cousin of Roswell and Area 51, has kept the locals in fear for almost a century.

According to the story , after WWII, British and American military scientists joined forces to conduct a series of strange experiments in the region. Closely related to the eugenics movement and similarly to the Nazis modus operandi, the tests went too far. Allegedly, they abducted a woman, hypnotized her and finally impregnated her with an artificially created human-pig DNA seed, with the hope to obtain a creature they could perform their tests on.
This pig-man business is not as far fetched as it sounds: In 1999, scientists suggested that pig transplants were safe for humans, and they are currently working on xenotransplantation at different levels and different species. Granted, the ethics and suffering of these animals for the “greater good” of humanity is unjustified, as they end up spending their entire lives suffering painful tests in small cages and eventually dying a horrible death.
This is what they thought would probably happen to the creature born out of the experiment between a human and a swine, but they were wrong. The scientists in charge of this horrible test monitored the woman closely, and after ten months they determined the fecundation attempt didn’t work out.

A year later, they were shocked to find out that her pregnancy had just been delayed. The result was a human baby with an incredibly huge head and a big snout resembling that of a pig. Later, this strange being escaped and hid into the woods, away from prejudiced human eyes. For decades, children and adults alike have reported the sighting of a strange tall man with a swine face roaming around the Cannock Chase woods.
Lee Brickley, a 26 year old local, knows the story well. He has been investigating the legend for almost a decade. On his book -UFO’s Werewolves & The Pig-Man: Exposing England’s Strangest Location, Cannock Chase- he describes multiple witness reports about the critter.
“I first heard about the pig-man through the rhyme when I was at school – so did many of my friends and many local people I’ve chatted to.” He says.
Brickley told us he received an e-mail from a source wishing to remain anonymous. This person claims that the half-man-half-pig story is the result of a military tactic in order to keep the population near Cannock Chase away from the secret facilities.
“The person who sent me the email refused to meet with me and so I have not included him in the book,” however, a waiter at a restaurant told the author that Pig-Man is real, and that the story regarding the coverup tactic is fake; there is a real creature roaming Cannock Chase. Brickley was able to meet with the waiter’s father, who confirmed the same story.
“The man I talk about in the book didn’t believe the military made up the rhyme and had a whole interesting back story about where it came from …. but the military connection is the same,” says the author. ” Perhaps, even if it was a story created by the military, it is so engrained in the psyche of local people that they genuinely do see him.”
Brickley believes the waiter and his father were telling the truth, although they could have just been deceived in some way.
I asked him if he could share with me some interesting witness report. He said there is one in particular that called his attention. A couple contacted Mr Brickley and provided him with a first hand account of an encounter with the beast.
After meeting with the couple, the author of the book determined that they were telling the truth. He told me that he has become friends with them ever since.
The following is the original e-mail describing the incident:
“Dear Mr Brickley, I’ve seen something rather odd on Cannock Chase that I think may be of some interest to you. In October 1993, whilst walking around Castle Ring, myself and the wife heard some strange noises coming from the surrounding trees. Thinking it was likely to be a local couple enjoying an illicit liason, we quickly moved away from the sound and headed back in the direction of our car. Upon reaching the steps down to the carpark, I happend to turn around and lay my eyes on the strangest creature I’ve ever seen. This thing was seven feet tall, from the neck down it looked like a man, even wearing clothes, but it’s head was far too big for a human and it had an elongated face with a snout-like nose. When I pointed it out to my wife, she became terrified, so we started walking more quickly towards our car and got inside. That’s when we started to hear this really high pitched squeeling noise that sounded like a pig being killed. That really spooked us…. Have you ever come accross anything like this before? Regards, John & Anne”
The problem? There are no pictures of Pig-Man. Zero physical evidence other than credible reports for three quarters of a century.

However, Brickley tells me that Pig-Man is not the only strange thing happening in the area. He says there is a spot in the region called the Pye-Green Tower on Cannock Chase, where UFOs, strange lights, werewolves and an unusual amount of reports of the military sneaking around during the early hours is fairly common. The tower, built during the Cold War by the British as a backup communication system -fearing an EMP attack from the Soviets- could be hiding more than mere electronics inside.
So what’s behind the Cannock Chase mystery? What does it really hide? One would assume that if Pig-Man was real he would be dead by now, specially after suffering such a deformity. Maybe he met with other creatures that are the result of other failed experiments. Or it could just be that, just like Mr Brickley suggests, what people are actually seeing is a Bigfoot.

Forget Bigfoot, panthers and UFOs...there’s something even more chilling on Cannock Chase.
It’s time for the fabled Hellhound – a portent of doom – to take a bow-wow.
Reports have been received on paranormal websites of the demonic dog roaming our area.
The hound, also known as the ‘ghost dog of Brereton,’ has been seen on numerous occasions stalking the roads leading into Brereton.
The apparition has been described as large, black, muscular, with sharp pointed ears and strangly glowing eyes. British folklore indicates that the black dog forewarns death.
The most prominent sightings happened in the 1970s, and early 1980s. Whilst driving through the Chase in 1972, Nigel Lea described seeing a ball of light crash into the ground.
He slowed down to take a closer look and was confronted by ‘the biggest bloody dog I have ever seen.’
Within a month one of Mr Leas close friends died in a terrible industrial accident, which Mr Lea believed may be connected to the dog appirition.
In the January, 1985, there was another report of the hell hound stalking Coal Pit Lane, Brereton. Mrs Sylvia Everett, of Cannock Wood Road, described a strange misty figure moving across the road as she and her husband drove on a warm and clear summer night. Although they could not explain the incident, Mrs Everett believed that it may have been connected to the to the dog-lore of Brereton.
Traditionally, demonic dogs are associated with grave yards, bridges, water, crossroads and places connected with violence and death.
Approaching Brereton on the Rugeley Road you come to an ideal crossroad, where the Rugeley Road, Colliery Road, Stile Cop road, and Startley Lane meet. The area is also associated with the former Lea Hall and Brereton Collieries – hazardous places where workers at times met with terrible accidents.
Could there be a connection between these sights and the spectral hound?
New sightings of the Black Eyed Girl of Cannock ChaseA leading paranormal investigator has scoured a Staffordshire beauty spot following chilling sightings of a spectre known locally as The Black Eyed Child.
Lee Brickley launched an in-depth investigation of Cannock Chase after reports that the ghoulish apparition has returned to the sprawling heathland.
The child was last spotted 30 years ago, sparking worldwide interest – and is today a cult internet sensation.
Latest descriptions of the girl, who has coal-black pits for eye sockets, are identical to those chronicled in the early 1980s.
Lee, author of books about the paranormal, was stunned recently when he received a new eye-witness account of the Black Eyed Child.
Alerted by what sounded like screams, a shocked woman came across the wandering, sightless spectre while walking Birches Valley.
“We instantly started running towards the noise,” she said. “We couldn’t find the child anywhere and so stopped to catch our breath.
“That’s when I turned round and saw a girl stood behind me, no more than 10 years old, with her hands over her eyes.
“It was as if she was waiting for a birthday cake.
“I asked if she was OK and if she had been the one screaming. She put her arms down by her side and opened her eyes.
“That’s when I saw they were completely black, no iris, no white, nothing.
“I jumped back and grabbed my daughter. When I looked again, the child was gone. It was so strange.”
On his paranormal website, Lee, 28 and himself from Cannock, said the woman’s experience mirrors the earlier sighting.

“One evening, just before dark, she heard a little girl frantically shouting for help. Rushing to locate the sound, she stumbled upon a dirt track and caught sight of the girl, about six years old running in the opposite direction.
“When my aunt caught up, the girl turned around and looked her in the eyes, and then ran off into the dark woodland. Her eyes had been completely black with no trace of white.
“There was a police search but to no avail. At the time, no-one had any reason to believe anything paranormal was going on. The girl certainly appeared to be of flesh and blood.”
There have been similar sightings of Black Eyed Children around the world.
“Some people believe them to be extra-terrestrials, vampires or ghosts,” said Lee. “But there is one big difference between the sightings around the world and the stories coming out of Cannock Chase.
“Only on Cannock Chase do the sightings consistently happen during the daytime.
“In the US many reports suggest that black-eyed children often appear in groups, regularly knocking at the door of unknowing victims and asking quietly if they may come inside.”
