Jurassic Park

Blockbusters Reviewed Welcome to the 46th edition of My Movie/TV Thoughts! Last time, I reviewed Avengers: Endgame (2019). This time, I’m reviewing: Jurassic Park (1993), rated M for violence That is the Australian rating; in the United States, it’s rated PG-13 for intense science fiction terror. As usual, I’ll give the trailer and a clip at the end. And as usual, I offer the following disclaimer, just to be safe: WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD. PROCEED AT OWN RISK. Jurassic Park Want a great action-adventure thriller? Call Steven Spielburg. Want a great and memorable movie score that will become immortal? Call John Williams. Combine the two – and throw in a cast that includes Richard Attenborough, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill, along with groundbreaking special effects and sheer terror – and you’ve got what has rightfully become regarded as one of the greatest classics of the last century. Arguably of all time. Aft

Debunking American Election Myths, Part 4: The Vice-President's Powers and Dueling Electors

“Facts are stubborn things” Former US President John Adams “Facts don’t care about your feelings” Ben Shapiro The previous parts: Debunking American Election Myths, Part 1: The Capitol Siege Debunking American Election Myths, Part 2: More on the Capitol Siege Just A Friendly Reminder Since my previous posts more insanity and misinformation about the capitol siege and the inauguration has come out – the most notable and nuttiest being that Joe Biden is only pretending to be president (!), which shouldn’t even need to be debunked, but that’s how far along the stupidity has come – but I’ll deal with those another time. Instead, I’ll focus on two issues that came to the front as Republicans desperately tried to overturn the 2020 United States presidential election results: claims that the Vice-President decides the winner, and that there were dueling/alternate electors in the swing states that Democratic winner Biden won. Just a bit of backstory for anyone

The Hungarian Monarchist Coups

One of the most notable effects of World War I was toppling of so many monarchies, and the establishment of republics or dictatorships in their place. In one fell swoop, Europe went from mostly monarchies to mostly republics or communist states. However, not all the monarchs went willingly. The last Austro-Hungarian monarch, Charles I, IV and III (1887-1922), who was deposed as Emperor of Austria (as Charles I), King of Hungary and Croatia (as Charles IV) and King of Bohemia (as Charles III) in November 1918, sought twice in 1920 to return to the abolished Hungarian throne. Neither was successful, although the latter attempt almost resulted in a civil war. Emperor-King Charles I and IV Background On 13 November 1918, Charles issued a proclamation in which he relinquished his right to take part in Hungarian affairs of state. He also released the officials in the Hungarian half of the empire from their oath of loyalty to him. This came two days after he issu

The Queen Memes

Image
Queen Elizabeth II turns 95 in 2 months, and has reigned for 69 years (as of 9 days ago). Not too surprisingly, the jokes about Betty White’s longevity are now being made about Her Majesty. (Surprisingly, nobody’s made any memes – that I’ve found, anyway – about her husband Prince Philip, who’s older than both the Queen and Betty – and is about to turn 100.) A nice light-hearted break from the news.
