Restored English Translation of Genesis: Chapter 34

Shabbat Shalom!  Today I present my Restored English Translation (RET) of Beresheet (Genesis) chapter 34.  As usual, it contains the Hebrew names (with a glossary of them at the end) and a list of where the Aleph-Tavs occur (as they're no longer included in the main text).

CHAPTER 34

1 And Leah's daughter Dinah (whom she bore to Ya'akov) went out to see the daughters of the land. 2 And when Shechem the son of Chamor the Chivi, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and had sex with her, and humbled her. 3 And his soul clung to Dinah the daughter of Ya'akov, and he loved the girl, and spoke to the heart of the girl. 4 And Shechem spoke to his father Chamor, saying, "Get me this girl for my wife." 5 And Ya'akov heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; and Ya'akov held his peace until they had come. 6 And Chamor the father of Shechem went out to Ya'akov to speak with him. 7 And the sons of Ya'akov came out of the field when they heard it. And the men were furious, and they were very angry, because he had made foolishness in Yisra'el in having sex with the daughter of Ya'akov's, which thing should not to be done. 8 And Chamor spoke with them, saying, "The soul of my son Shechem clings to your daughter. Please give her him for a wife. 9 And you make marriages with us, and give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you. 10 And you will live with us, and the land will be before you. You live and trade in it, and gain possessions in it." 11 And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find grace in your eyes, and what you will say to me I will give. 12 Heap on me a great bride-price and gift, and I will give according as you will say to me. But give me the girl for a wife. 13 And the sons of Ya'akov answered Shechem and his father Chamor deceitfully, and they said that he had defiled their sister Dinah. 14 And they said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that is a reproach to us. 15 But in this will we consent to you: if you will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised. 16 Then will we give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughter to us, and we will live with you, and we will become one people. 17 But if you will not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter, and we will be gone." 18 And their words pleased Chamor and Hamor's son Shechem. 19 And the young man did not hesitate to do the thing because he had delight in Ya'akov's daughter. And he was more honourable than all the house of his father. 20 And Chamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke with the men of their city, saying, 21 "These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them live in the land and trade in it. For behold, the land, it is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give our daughters to them. 22 Only in this will the men consent to us for to live with us, to be one people: if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised. 23 Will not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will live with us." 24 And all who went out of the gate of his city listened to Chamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city. 25 And it was on the third day, when they were sore, that two of Ya'akov's sons, Shimon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came upon the city boldly and slew all the males. 26 And they killed Chamor and Shechem with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out. 27 The sons of Ya'akov came upon the slain and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister. 28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their donkeys, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field. 29 And they took captive all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives, and spoiled and all that was in the house. 30 And Ya'akov said to Shimon and Levi, "You have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Kena'ani and the Perizzi. And I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and kill me, and I shall be destroyed, I and my house. 31 And they answered, "Should he treat our sister like an adulteress?"
