Restored English Translation of Genesis: Chapter 28

Today I present the latest installment in my Restored English Translation (RET) of the Bible.  Today’s is Beresheet (Genesis) chapter 28.  As usual, it contains the Hebrew names, with a glossary of them after the chapter.  At the end is a list of where the Aleph Tavs occur (as they are no longer included in the main text).

CHAPTER 28

1 And Yitschak called Ya’akov, and he blessed him, and charged him, and said to him, “You will not take a wife of the Kena’ani women. 2 Arise, go to Padan-Aram, to the house of your mother’s father Betu’el; and take for yourself a wife from there of the daughters of your mother’s brother Lavan. 3 And EL SHADDAI bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a multitude of peoples. 4 And may He give to you the blessing of Avraham, to you and to your seed with you; that you may possess the land in which you are a stranger, which ELOHIM gave to Avraham.” 5 And Yitschak sent Ya’akov, and he went to Padan-Aram to Lavan, son of Betu’el the Arami, the brother of Ya’akov’s and Esav’s mother Rivkah. 6 And Esav saw that Yitschak had blessed Ya’akov, and sent him away to Padan-Aram, to take for himself a wife from there; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, “You will not take a wife of the Kena’ani women”; 7 and that Ya’akov obeyed his father and his mother and went to Padan-Aram. 8 And Esav saw that the Kena’ani women were evil in the eyes of his father Yitschak. 9 Then Esav went to Yishma’el and took Machalat the daughter of Avraham’s son Yishma’el, the sister of Nevayot, to the wives which he had for his wife. 10 And Ya’akov went out from Beer-Sheva and went toward Charan. 11 And he came upon a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took of the stones of that place and put them under his head, and lay down in that place. 12 And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to the heavens. And behold, the messengers of ELOHIM ascending and descending on it! 13 And, behold, YEHOVAH stood above it and said, “I AM YEHOVAH ELOHAY of your grandfather Avraham, and the ELOHAY of Yitschak. The land which you are lying on, to you and to your seed I will give it. 14 And your seed will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed in your and in your seed. 15 And, behold, I am with you, and will keep you in all places where you go, and will bring you again to this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken to you of.” 16 And Ya’akov awoke out of his sleep, and he said, “Surely YEHOVAH is in this place and I did not know.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How dreadful is this place! This is none other but the house of ELOHIM, and this is the gate of the heavens.” 18 And Ya’akov rose up early in the morning and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar. And he poured oil on the top of it. 19 And he called the name of that place Beyt-El; but the name of that city was Luz at the first. 20 And Ya’akov vowed a vow, saying, “If ELOHIM will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothes to put on, 21 so that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then YEHOVAH will be my ELOHIM. 22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, will be ELOHIM’s house. And of all that You will give me I will surely give the tenth to you.”
