Restored English Translation of Genesis: Chapter 21
Today I present my Restored English Translation (RET) of Beresheet (Genesis) chapter 21. As usual, it contains the Hebrew names, with a glossary of them afterwards. At the very end is a list of where the Aleph/Tavs occur, as they are no longer included in the main text.
CHAPTER 21
1 And YEHOVAH visited Sarah as He had said, and YEHOVAH did to Sarah as He had said. 2 For Sarah conceived and bore Avraham a son in his old age at the set time of which ELOHIM had spoken to him. 3 And Avraham called the name of the son who was born to him, whom Sarah had borne to him, Yitschak. 4 And Avraham circumcised his son Yitschak, a son of 8 days, as ELOHIM had commanded him. 5 And Avraham was 100 years old when his son Yitachak was born to him. 6 And Sarah said, “ELOHIM has made laughter for me. All that hear will laugh with me.” 7 And she said, “Who would have said to Avraham, ‘Sarah will suckle children’? For I have born him a son in his old age.” 8 And the child grew and was weaned. And Avraham made a great feast on the day Yitschak was weaned. 9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Mitsriyt, whom she had bore to Avraham, mocking. 10 Therefore she said to Avraham, “Cast out this maid servant and her son, for the son of this maid servant will not be heir with my son, with Yitschak.” 11 And the thing was very evil in Avraham’s sight because of his son. 12
And ELOHIM said to Avraham, “Do not let it be evil in your eyes because
of the boy and because of your maid servant. Listen to Sarah’s voice in
all that she has said to you, for your seed will be called in Yitschak.
13 And also the son of the maid servant, I will make a nation of him, for he is your seed.” 14
And Avraham rose up early in the morning and took bread and a skin of
water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away. And she left and wandered in the wilderness of Be’er-Sheva. 15 And the water in the skin was spent, and she put the child under one of the shrubs. 16
And she went and sat down herself opposite him, a good way off (about a
bow’s shot away, for she said, “Let me not see the death of the
child”). And she sat opposite him and lifted up her voice and wept. 17 And ELOHIM heard the
voice of the young boy. And the messenger of ELOHIM called to Hagar out
of the heavens, and he said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Do not fear,
for ELOHIM has heard the voice of the boy, there where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the boy and hold up your hand on him, for I will make of him a great nation.” 19 And ELOHIM opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave drink to the youth. 20 And ELOHIM was with the lad, and he grew and lived in the wilderness and became an archer. 21 And he lived in the wilderness of Paran. And his mother took for him a wife out of the land of Mitsrayim.
22
And it happened at that time that Avimelek and Pikol (the chief captain
of his host) spoke to Avraham, saying, “ELOHIM is with you in all that
you do. 23
Now therefore swear to me here by ELOHIM that you will not deal falsely
with me, nor with my son, nor with my offspring; but according to the
kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me and to the land in
which you have sojourned.” 24 And Avraham said, “I will swear.” 25 And Avraham reproved Avimelek because of a well of water which the servants of Avimelek had seized. 26 And Avimelek said, “I don’t know who has done this thing, neither did you tell me, even I had not heard until today.” 27 And Avraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Avimelek, and both of them cut a covenant. 28 And Avraham set 7 ewe lambs of the flock by themselves. 29 And Avimelek said to Avraham, “What do those 7 ewe lambs, which you have set by themselves, mean?” 30 And he answered, “For you will take these 7 ewes from my hand, so that it may become a witness for me that I dug this well.” 31 Which is why he called that place Be’er-Sheva: because there both of them swore. 32
Thus they cut a covenant at Be’er-Sheva. Then Avimelek and Pikol, the
chief captain of his host, rose up and they returned to the land of the
P’lishtim. 33 And Avraham planted a grove in Be’er-Sheva and called there the Name of YEHOVAH EL OLAM. 34 And Avraham lived in the land of the P’lishtim many days.
