Restored English Translation of Genesis: Chapter 17
Here is my Restored English Translation (RET) of Beresheet (Genesis) chapter 17. As usual, it contains the Hebrew names, with a glossary of them after the chapter. At the very end is a glossary of where the Aleph-Tavs occur, as they are no longer included in the main text.
CHAPTER
17
1
And when Avram was 99 years old, YEHOVAH appeared to Avram and said
to him, "I AM EL SHADDAI! Walk before Me and be perfect, 2 and I will make My Covenant between Me and you, and will multiply
you exceedingly." 3
And Avram fell on his face. And ELOHIM spoke with him, saying, 4
"As for Me, behold, My Covenant is with you, and you will be the
ancestor of many nations. 5
Neither will your
name be called Avram any longer, but your name shall be Avraham, for I have made you an
ancestor of many nations. 6
And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of
you, and kings shall come out of you. 7
And I will establish My
Covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their
generations for an everlasting covenant, to be ELOHIM to you and to
your descendants after you. 8
And I will give to you and to your seed after you the
land of your sojourning: all
the land of Kena'an for a possession never-ending. And I will be to
them for an ELOHIM." 9
And ELOHIM said to Avraham, "And you shall keep My
Covenant, you and your descendants after you in their
generations. 10
This is My Covenant, which you shall guard, between Me and you and
your seed after you: every son among you shall be circumcised. 11
And you will circumcise the
flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a token of the Covenant
between Me and you. 12
And the son of eight days among you shall be circumcised, every male
child in your generations, whether he be born in your house or bought
with silver from any stranger who is not of your seed. 13
Both he that is born in your house and he that is bought with your
money must be circumcised, and My Covenant will be in your flesh for
an everlasting Covenant. 14
And the uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in
the
flesh of his foreskin, his soul shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My Covenant."
15
And ELOHIM said to Avraham, "As
for
Sarai your wife, you will not call her
name Sarai, but her name will be Sarah. 16
And I will bless her and give you a son out of her. Yes, I will
bless her, and she will become nations. Kings of peoples shall be
out of her." 17
Then Avraham fell on his face and laughed and said in his heart,
"Shall a child be born to him who is 100 years old? And will
Sarah, a daughter of 90 years, bear?" 18
And Avraham said to ELOHIM, "Oh that Yishma'el might live before
you!" 19
And ELOHIM said, "Your wife Sarah will indeed bear you a son,
and you will call his
name Yitschak; and I will establish My
Covenant with him for an everlasting Covenant with his descendants
after him. 20
And as for Yishma'el, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him
and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly. He
will father 12 princes and I will make a great nation of him. 21
But I will establish My Covenant with
Yitschak,
whom Sarah will bear to you at this set-apart time next year."
22
And He finished talking with him, and ELOHIM went up from Avraham.
23
And Avraham took
his son Yishma'el and all
the children of his house and all
purchased with his money – every male among the men of Avraham's
house. And he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins in the same
day, even as ELOHIM said to him. 24
And Avraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of
his foreskin. 25
And his son Yishmael was 13 years old when he was circumcised in
the
flesh of his foreskin. 26
In the same day both Avraham and Yishmael his son were circumcised.
27
And all the men of his house, both born in the house or bought with
silver fron a son of a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
