Restored English Translation of Genesis: Chapter 9
Here is my Restored English Translation (RET) of Beresheet (Genesis) chapter 9. As usual, it contains the Hebrew names and the Aleph Tavs (although I now doubt them). A glossary of the Hebrew names used can be found at the end.
This chapter contains the infamous incident of Noah getting drunk, and Ham spotting him. This incident is very strange; verses 20-27 read (RET): “20 And Noach [Noah] began to be a man of the ground, and planted a vineyard. 21 And he drank from the wine, and was drunk. And he stripped himself inside his tent. 22 And saw Cham [Ham], the father of Kena’an [Canaan],את nakedness of his father; and he told to his two brothers outside. 23 And took Shem and Yefet [Japheth] את the garment and laid it on both their shoulders, and they went backwards, and covered את nakedness of their father. And their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 And Noach awoke from his wine, and he knew את what his younger son had done to him. 25 And he said, “Cursed be Kena’an! He shall be a servant of servants to his brothers.” 26 And he said, “Blessed by YEHOVAH ELOHAY [the Lord God] of Shem; and Kena’an shall be his servant. 27 ELOHIM [God] shall enlarge Yefet, and he shall live in the tents of Shem; and Kena’an shall be a servant to them.”
Why did Noah curse his grandson (Ham’s son Canaan) when he awoke? What had “his younger son done to him” that he would do that? Some have suggested, based on the Hebrew, that there may have been something sexual about the encounter. The Hebrew word for “saw” in verse 22 (#H7200) can mean “enjoy” or something similar (as in Ham “enjoyed” his father’s nakedness; disturbing rendition). When it says that Noah “knew” what his son had done to him, the Hebrew word (#3045), while sometimes meaning knowledge, is also the same word for sexual intercourse. Did Ham perform a sexual act on his father?
Or his mother? As Leviticus 18 demonstrates, “nakedness of your father” can refer to your mother. Did Ham have sex with his mother? Did he rape her? Was Canaan the result of this union?
Ultimately we can only speculate.

CHAPTER 9
1 And blessed ELOHIM את Noach and את his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill את the earth. 2
And the fear and the dread of you shall be on every animal of the
earth, and on every bird of the air, on all that moves on the earth, and
on all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. 3 Every crawling thing that lives shall be food for you. Even as the green herbs, I have given you את all things. 4 But you shall not eat flesh with the life in it, its blood. 5 And surely את the
blood of your lives I will demand, at the hand of every animal will I
demand it; and at the hand of the human, at the hand of every man’s
brother, I will demand the life of the human. 6 Whoever sheds the human’s blood, by a human will his blood be shed; for in the image of ELOHIM He made את the humans. 7 And you, be fruitful and multiply. Bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it.”
8 And ELOHIM spoke to Noach and to his sons with him, saying, 9 “Even I, behold, I am establishing את My Covenant with you and את your seed after you, 10 and את every
living thing with you, of the birds, of the beasts, and of every animal
with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every animal of the
earth. 11 And I have established את My
Covenant with you; and all flesh will not be cut off anymore by the
waters of the flood; neither shall there be anymore a flood to destroy
the earth.” 12 And said ELOHIM, “This את is the sign of the Covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with you for perpetual generations. 13את My bow I have set in the cloud, and it will be for a sign of a Covenant between Me and the earth. 14 And it shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, then the bow shall be seen in that cloud, 15 and I will remember את My
Covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all
flesh; and the waters will not again become a flood to destroy all
flesh. 16
And the bow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember
the everlasting Covenant between ELOHIM and every living soul in all
flesh that is on the earth.” 17 And ELOHIM said to Noach, “This is את the sign of the Covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
18 And the sons of Noach, that went forth from the ark, were Shem and Cham and Yefet. And Cham, he is the father of Kena’an. 19 These are the three sons of Noach, and from them the whole earth was overspread. 20 And Noach began to be a man of the ground, and planted a vineyard. 21 And he drank from the wine, and was drunk. And he stripped himself inside his tent. 22 And saw Cham, the father of Kena’an, את nakedness of his father; and he told to his two brothers outside. 23 And took Shem and Yefet את the garment and laid it on both their shoulders, and they went backwards, and covered את nakedness of their father. He shall be a servant of servants to his brothers.” 26 And he said, “Blessed by YEHOVAH ELOHAY of Shem; and Kena’an shall be his servant. 27 ELOHIM shall enlarge Yefet, and he shall live in the tents of Shem; and Kena’an shall be a servant to them.” 28 And Noach lived 350 years after the flood. 29 And all the days of Noach were 950 years, and he died.
