Restored English Translation of Genesis: Chapter 3

The next installment of my Restored English Translation (RET): Beresheet (Genesis) chapter 3.  As usual, it contains the Aleph Tav and the Hebrew names and a glossary for the Hebrew names.  Nothing much else to make a commentary out of, apart from an observation about the serpent who tempted Chavah (Eve).  Notice verse 14: “And YEHOVAH ELOHIM said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, you are cursed above all beasts, and above every animal of the field. On your belly you shall go, and you will eat dust all the days of your life.” (RET)  So, despite popular portrayals, the snake originally had legs, and would have looked just like a lizard.  (The 1966 movie The Bible: In the Beginning… correctly portrayed the snake as having originally had legs, and shows it losing them when YAH cursed it.)

CHAPTER 3
1 And the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which YEHOVAH ELOHIM had made. And he said to the woman, “Is it so that ELOHIM said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, ELOHIM has said, ‘You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'” 4 And the serpent said to the woman, “You will surely not die, 5 for ELOHIM knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as ELOHIM, knowing good and evil.” 6 And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make wise; and she took of its fruit and ate. And she also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves girdles. 8 And they heard את the call of YEHOVAH ELOHIM walking in the garden in the breeze of the day. And the human and his wife hid themselves from the presence of YEHOVAH ELOHIM in the middle of the trees of the garden. 9 And YEHOVAH ELOHIM called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he replied, “את Your voice I heard in the garden, and I was afraid, for I am naked, and I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree which I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 And the human said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she has given to me of the tree, and I ate.” 13 And YEHOVAH ELOHIM said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman replied, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 And YEHOVAH ELOHIM said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all beasts, and above every animal of the field. On your belly you shall go, and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise Him on the heel.”
16 And to the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; in sorrow you shall bring forth children. And your desire shall be toward your husband, and he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and you have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’, cursed is the ground for your sake. In sorrow shall you eat of it all the days of your life; 18 it will bring forth thorns and thistles for you. And you shall eat את the plant of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.” 20 And the human called his wife’s name Chavah, because she became the mother of all living. 21 And YEHOVAH ELOHIM made coats of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
22 And YEHOVAH ELOHIM said, “Behold, the human become as one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever…” 23 Therefore YEHOVAH ELOHIM sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till את the ground which he was taken from. 24 And He drove out the human. And He fixed at the east of the Garden of Eden את the Keruvim, and the flaming sword whirling around to guard the way of the tree of life.
