The World's Monarchs

  Many think of monarchy as a dying, outdated, mediaeval institution. And yet, at the same time, one of the two most well-known state leaders in the world (alongside the American President) – and THE most popular (sorry, America) – is the Queen of the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II, who is also the Queen of 15 other countries, and the former Queen of 17 more. While certainly not the norm it was at the beginning of last century, monarchy is not as rare as many think – 44 countries, or about a quarter of the world’s nations, have a monarch. There are 30 reigning monarchs (before you ask about the discrepancy, two words: Queen Elizabeth. Also, Andorra has two monarchs.). (Although it’s become increasingly common to view Eswatini as having two monarchs, in which case there are 31 reigning monarchs.)
